Arrest the ‘informa fi ded’ culture
Dear Editor,
Every now and then someone with access to the wider media expresses concern about the “informa fi ded ” culture that has taken hold of Jamaica, but none has come up with a viable solution to this grave problem.
When I first heard about “informa fi ded” I did not take it seriously. I thought it was just another phrase coming from the ghetto. It wasn’t until I was confronted with the reality that this staement was no joke and that when people called you an “informa”, it was a signal to the underworld that you should be dead for reasons unknown. It is like they have passed a death sentence on you.
This is very serious, and I don’t believe that the Government really takes this matter with the concern that it should. If they did, they would treat this matter wtith urgency; because it is very real.
As usual, because it is not happening with regularity uptown, nobody is approaching the matter with the seriousness it deserves. But they should, because that may be the reason their businesses may be losing millions of dollars to a dishonest employee who can steal whatever he needs because he knows he is protected by these three words “informa fi ded”.
So what should we do about it? I am suggesting that it should be treated in the same way the laws of the land treat attempted murder. If someone calls a person an “informa”, in the associated derogatory way, that person should be immediately arrested; because he or she might be the very criminal the police have been looking for without success.
I sincerely hope the Government will move with urgency in this matter
