Making Lee’tal music in Manchester
This is the second of a 10-part on ‘Generation Next’ of Jamaican music producers.
MANCHESTER was the epicentre of a roots-reggae resurgence during the 1990s, led by homeboys Tony Rebel and Garnet Silk.
Producer Rohan ‘Lee’tal’ Lyn-Lee is determined to revive those glory days by working with artistes through his Inflowmatiq and God Lives Within (GLW) labels.
Terry Linen, Anthony Cruz, and Utan Green are some of the experienced acts Lee’tal works with out of his Baptist Road studio in Mandeville.
His labels have also recorded and released songs by emerging artistes such as Upsurge, Stikki Tantafori and gospel artiste Crazy Praise.
Lee-tal, whose self-produced songs include Talk of the Town and Can’t Get Wi Down, told Splash that, while the artistes cover different genres, he takes the same approach to each production.
“Powerful, uplifting messages in the music and also spoken word. At the moment I’m working on a spoken word album with some powerful messages that will echo through the ages,” he boasted.
Most of the music for Inflowmatiq and GWL are programmed by Lee’tal and keyboardists Omar ‘Avalon’ Lilly, Michael ‘Nemeses’ Bennif and Kemoy ‘K Swiss’ Mair.
In terms of live instruments, he uses musicians from Germany.
“I do a mix of both. Live music touches the souls of mankind,” he reasoned.
Born in Christiana, Lee’tal’s entry into the music business came 10 years ago as a deejay. He gradually got into production with Inflowmatiq, collaborating with artistes like Cruz — Silk’s nephew — and Green who were part of the roots renaissance over 20 years ago.
Recently, he launched GLW which focuses on inspirational music. His self-produced Let Your Light Shine will be the first album released by that label.
