Vanity Club upbeat despite odds
ROCK duo Vanity Club are the only males left in the running of season 12’s Digicel Rising Stars competition.
In a season dominated by females, the pair has held its own for the past six weeks and, in spite of receiving a lot of flak for their unconventional style, they believe they have what it takes to win the competition.
“Of course, we feel a bit pressured being the only men in the competition but I think our style gives us an edge,” said Roman Patterson, one-half of the duo.
Royan Wallace, the other member of the duo said: “I definitely think we have what it takes to win because weâre not typical and we don’t do mediocre. People actually like that we’re different … they like our style and I think they see that we have something new and interesting to offer.”
The judges, however, think that one of the women may take home the title this season.
“It definitely feels like a female winner this year,” said singer/songwriter judge Alaine. “It’s really a welcome change to see the girls shining on the show. Not only do they sound really strong, they sound like world-class vocalists and they are stepping up and outshining the boys.”
She added: “When you even just look at the wildcards this year, you see that the women are really going hard and I can’t wait to see them battle it out in the finals.”
Since the start of the competition, the three wildcards selected by the judges have been female – starting with Conroy Wilson’s selection of Marsha K, Alaine’s surprise choice to bring back eliminated contestant, Roxy J after a disappointing performance by her original wildcard picks, and Anthony Miller’s late entry, Amoui Ashman.
The competition, which started out with 14 contestants, has now been reduced to nine, with eight spots being held by women.
