Shoplifter tells court she had nothing for children
A magistrate has ordered a social enquiry report before sentencing a janitor who has been accused of stealing more than $2,000 worth of grocery from a supermarket.
The accused, Ann Marie Robinson, 44, pleaded guilty with explanation to simple larceny when she appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
Allegations are that on June 27 the accused woman was seen taking food item from a Hi-Lo Supermarket, and left with two tins of corn beef, one Nestlé condensed milk, two packs of skittles, and one Nesson cooking oil, valued at $2,200.
She was followed by a store security guard and the items found in her bag.
When the accused woman appeared in court on Tuesday, Resident Magistrate Simone Wolfe-Reece asked: “Is there anything you want to say before sentencing?”
“I know what I did was wrong. On that day I didn’t have anything to give to my children,” she replied.
“Do you have a job?” Wolfe-Reece asked.
“Not now,” the accused woman said.
“When last you had a job?” Wolfe-Reece asked.
“Up to the [time of the] incident,” she replied.
A social inquiry was subsequently ordered by the magistrate.
Robinson is to return to court for sentencing on September 11, at which time the social inquiry report is expected to be ready.
