Typewriter returns in style
IN a demonstration of pure class, Typewriter, two-time Horse-of-the-Year, came with an electrifying run three-wide off the pace to land the Nigel B Nunes Memorial Cup feature in fine style at Caymanas Park yesterday.
Coming off an eighth-month absence due to injury, Typewriter showed no sign of distress when putting away his six rivals by two lengths to complete his third consecutive victory in this Open Allowance event for three-year-olds and upward going over 1,820 metres.
Veteran jockey Ian ‘Dolly Baby’ Spence rode a brilliant race aboard the two-time Superstakes winner to signal the return of one of the top distance horses in training at the Park.
With a tight hold, Spence held Typewriter off the pace behind leaders Locked And Loaded (Shamaree Muir up) Uncle Taf (Wesley Henry aboard) and Timeforarms (Sadiki Blake astride) for most of the way.
Typewriter then responded well from the urging of Spence to go into a striking position behind Timeforarms and Franfield (Shane Ellis up) approaching the home turn, and although drifting wide at the top of the straight, the six-year-old bay gelding by Western Classic – Docs’ Paladin proved too powerful for his rivals and cruised home.
Timeforarms, who looked the likely winner at the 300-metre pole, finished second, and Franfield third ahead of the fast-finishing Military Move under O’Brien White.
Trained by Spencer Chung, owned by Robert F Chung and WPV Chung and bred by Ham Stables, Typewriter ran the distance in 1:56:0 minutes.
“The trainer told me to get a clean break, sit comfortable on the rails and just let him run at the two-furlong marker, and that is what I did,” Spence told the Jamaica Observer.
Meanwhile, the Wayne DaCosta-trained Dreamliner produced another impressive performance to win the 1000-metre round Terremoto Trophy for native-bred two-year-olds.
Ridden by Robert Halledeen, Dreamlimer, after battling with Fedora on the lead from the start, drew clear at the top of the lane to win by six lengths over stable companion Vision in a decent 1:01:3 minutes.
Racing continues next Saturday.
