Typewriter returns in style
SPENCER Chung, trainer of Horse of the Year, Typewriter, says his charge is in fine fettle following a good run on Saturday, his first after an eight-month absence from competitive racing due to an injury. “Yes, he is fine. He came out of the race well and I am just happy for that.
Now, I will be seeking to run him at least one more time before his main objective which is the Superstakes,” Chung said.
Typewriter running in the Nigel B Nunes Memorial Cup (1,820 metres) proved too strong for his six rivals, romping home by two lengths. Ridden by veteran Ian Spence, Typewriter sat off the pace in fifth position as Locked And Loaded (Shamaree Muir), Uncle Taf (Wesley Henry) and Timeforarms (Sadiki Blake) dictated the early fractions.
The two-time Superstakes hero then responded well when asked by Spence, and overtook horses turning for home before he drew away at the furlong pole to win easily. Timeforarms finished second, Franfield (Shane Ellis) third and Military Move fourth. The winning time was 1:56:0 minutes.
It was the third consecutive time that the six-year-old bay gelding by Western Classic – Doc’s Paladin was winning this event. “It was a good performance as it was his first race in nearly a year.
He got rest which he needed and that is what some horses want. “He returned down in class as he is a Grade One horse and he carried the top weight of 57.0 kilogrammes well and won well,” Chung told the Complete Racing Guide.
