Baugh slams unbeaten ton as trial match tapers into draw
CARLTON Baugh emphasised his good run of form, cracking an undefeated century yesterday for John Campbell’s XI in the second innings of the Jamaica Scorpions three-day trial match against Paul Palmer’s XI at Sabina Park.
When the drawn match was called off just before 5:00 pm, Campbell’s XI were 252-4 after bowling out Palmer’s XI for 268 earlier in the day.
Scores: Campbell’s XI 350 (86 overs) & 252-4 (71 overs); Palmer’s XI 268 (105 overs).
The veteran Baugh, dropped on 78 by wicketkeeper Aldaine Thomas off wrist-spinner Damion Jacobs, played fluently for his even 100, which came off 164 balls. He struck seven fours and two sixes.
The sidelined West Indies wicketkeeper/batsman hit 94 in the first innings and notched another half-century in the previous trial match. Yesterday, he employed the late cut and dab with telling effect, garnering dozens of runs backward of point on the offside.
The tall Cassius Burton was left on 52 not out. He and Baugh shared in an unbroken stand of 126 runs for the fifth wicket.
Number three batsman Andre McCarthy, who made an unbeaten 163 in the first innings, was dismissed for 48 second time around.
The left-handed opening duo of John Campbell and Kerry Holness made 19 and nine, respectively.
Brandon King, who made a century in an earlier trial match, made only eight.
Left-arm seamer Gavon Brown finished with 2-44 off nine overs, while left-arm finger spinner Coi Thompson took 2-47 off 25 overs.
Resuming yesterday on 226-5, Palmer’s XI lost their last five wickets for 42 runs.
Tamar Lambert failed to add to his overnight score and was bowled by pacer Marquino Mindley for 74.
Wicketkeeper Aldaine Thomas, the other overnight batsman, was dismissed for four.
Mindley grabbed 3-46 off 20 overs, while left-arm finger spinner Nikita Miller and pacer Brian Buchanan ended with two wickets each.
The sixth and final trial match — a four-day version — is scheduled for next week.
The trial matches are used to help selectors pick the squad for the Professional Cricket League, starting November 6.
