Technical staff sweating on Shaw’s fitness as Girlz face Puerto Rico
PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — The Under-20 Reggae Girlz head coach Hue Menzies said his players will maintain their attacking approach when they face Puerto Rico in today’s semi-final of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Championship at the Stade Sylvio Cator.
But uncertainty surrounds the fitness of captain and top goal scorer Khadija Shaw, who was limping with a leg injury by the end of the Group B game against Trinidad & Tobago on Monday.
The semi-final game will start 4:00 pm (3:00 pm Jamaica time). Hosts Haiti and Trinidad & Tobago square off in the second game of the double-header at 6:00 pm Jamaica time.
Jamaica’s 4-3-3 formation saw them score eight goals in three group matches. They conceded three times, including two second-half goals against Trinidad after jumping into a two-goal lead.
Despite the draw, they won Group B with seven points, two ahead of second-placed Trinidad & Tobago.
“We are going in with an attacking mindset. We’ll keep the 4-3-3, an attacking formation, and we are going to go out and use our athleticism as an advantage to us.
“They [Puerto Rico] are a good team, an organised team and they look to play the ball forward quickly. Obviously we’ll have to figure out ways of breaking them down,” Menzies told reporters yesterday.
The Jamaicans, who are likely to add newly-arrived striker Simone Wark to their starting line-up, had a light day yesterday, including a recovery session in the swimming pool. The Jamaican delegation was also treated to some sightseeing in non-volatile areas surrounding the Haitian capital.
“Some players are banged up, but the physio [Ronnet Scarlet] is working hard to keep them rejuvenated,” said Menzies.
He said he would have players practise penalty kicks to prepare should the game require it today.
At least one change has been forced on the Jamaicans with central defender Tarania Clarke out on suspension due to picking up yellow cards in two games during the group stage.
Carlletia Savizon, the regular starting midfielder, is in line to fill that void at the back. Rasha Roberts, who missed the last game due to an ankle ailment, has recovered and is set to step into midfield.
Shaw, scorer of four goals from a midfield position in the tournament, is scheduled to be assessed for fitness this morning.
Speaking through a translator, Carlos Avdissian, the Puerto Rico head coach, was confident his team will express their attacking intent against the favourites Jamaica.
“It [the Jamaica team] is a very strong team with very fast players who open [spaces] nicely and they know what they are playing.
“We respect Jamaica, but I think Puerto Rico have its own identity. We are going to play our game, always respecting Jamaica, but we have our identity that at some point will be reflected in the game,” said Avdissian.
Puerto Rico finished second in three-team Group A after losing 0-1 to Bermuda, and surprising hosts Haiti 3-0. Haiti topped that group on goal difference, boosted by a 7-0 trouncing of Bermuda.
