Change of tactics did it for Dreamliner
WAYNE DaCosta, the current champion trainer, is of the view that a change in tactics is the reason behind the victory by Dreamliner in the 11th running of the $2.95 million Cash Pot ‘Only One For Me’ Trophy at Caymanas Park on Monday.
Surprisingly, Dreamliner, known as a pronounced front-runner, was kept off the pace by jockey Richard Mitchell and came storming through on the rails in deep stretch to win by a length and a quarter over Nuclear Affair and stable companion Future King.
The graded stakes race for native-bred two-year-olds over 1,200 metres was the first leg of the rich and prestigious Supreme Ventures Limited (SVL) Two-Year-Old ‘Triple Crown’ Series, which is worth $11.55 million (inclusive of a $1-m bonus).
“Instead of going to the lead, as customary with Dreamliner, we changed the plan and had him come from off the pace this time,” DaCosta told the Complete Racing Guide.
“I told the jockey (Richard Mitchell) basically to sit like third or fourth and not to contend with the early pace because there was a lot of ‘cheap’ speed in the race that didn’t have any chance of winning, and he did exactly that,” he said.
“He (Dreamliner) got the inside run and everybody at Caymanas Park knows that
Mitchell loves the rails and he got a perfect run and brought Dreamliner home,” he further stated.
Commenting on the performance of his other charge, Future King, who finished third, DaCosta said: “Future King was a little bit too early, I did want him a little bit more off the pace and that is why he came back in the final furlong to finish third,” said DaCostaWhen asked about Dreamliner’s chances in the remainder of the SVL series, DaCosta explained: “As the two-year-old races progress, the two-year-olds will go further and further, so we will just have to wait and see if Dreamliner stays. The longer the races become, based on the horses that are running now, it will suit horses like Vision, Future King and maybe Zugulu,” DaCosta ended.
