Shane shines with silver
JAMAICA’S Para-lympian Shane Hudson claimed a silver medal in the Men’s T47 400m at the IPC’s Athletics World Championships in Doha, Qatar, after running his personal best of 48.89 seconds yesterday.
It was the first time that a Jamaican was mining a medal in an ambulant event at the Championships and indeed at a signature international meet.
“Jamaica has another silver from me,” was the patriotic response of the seasoned campaigner who won silver at the 2011 Guadalajara Athletics World Championships and also at the 2015 Toronto Para Pan American Games.
Coach Neville Sinclair was evidently pleased. “Shane deserves every inch of that silver with his PR, but we’ll be working for the gold in Rio, which is in his grasp.”
The event was won by American Jaquvis Hart in a championships record 48.17 seconds, with Russian Alexey Kotlov finishing third in 48.92 seconds.
Meanwhile, Jamaica’s Sylvia Grant finished in ninth place in the women’s F57 shot put final, despite a personal best throw of 6.46 metres.
The event was won by Stela Eneva of Bulgaria, who set an area record of 11.14 metres, ahead of Angeles Ortiz Hernandez with a season’s best of 11.13 metres, and Germany’s Ilke Wyludda, also with a season’s best 10.95 metres.
