Windies can chase 200 target, says Brathwaite
COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (CMC) — West Indies opening batsman Kraigg Brathwaite says he is confident his side can successfully chase a winning target in the vicinity of 200 runs against Sri Lanka in the second Test at the P Sara Oval here.
West Indies were trailing Sri Lanka by 113 runs after they were bundled out for 163 before tea on the first day. Sri Lanka, bowled out for 200 in their first innings, were 76 for the loss of two wickets, at stumps on the second day Friday.
“I think anything around 200 will be acceptable,” declared Brathwaite.
“I believe we have the batting to go to a fourth innings. I believe we can chase anything around there.”
Brathwaite top scored with a patient 57 off 101 balls including three boundaries while the next best score was 21 from his skipper Jason Holder.
Windies were rattled by medium pacer Dhammika Prasad who destroyed the top order grabbing four for 34, while Dilruwan Perera baffled the lower order snatching three for 28 with his off breaks.
Braithwaite mounted the main fight for West Indies which was extended through a 32-run seventh-wicket partnership between Denesh Ramdin and Jason Holder.
“I believe it is a good pitch but those Sri Lankan bowlers bowled really good and the spinners got some purchase. But once you organise yourself and play your game and plan your innings you will succeed on that pitch,” said the right-handed opener.
“The main thing is to keep a positive mindset. I used my feet a couple times and that was part of the tactics.”
