Two appear in Tobago court on charges of murdering British-born attorney and wife
SCARBOROUGH, Tobago (CMC) – Two men, including a national from St Vincent and the Grenadines, appeared in a Magistrate’s Court here on Tuesday charged with the murder of British born attorney Richard Wheeler and his 67-year-old Trinidadian wife, Grace.
Naajid Hills, 23 from St Vincent and the Grenadines and Andre Romeo, 29, from Trinidad and Tobago appeared before Magistrate Cheryl Anne Antoine in the Scarborough Magistrates Court and were remanded in custody until November 24.
The men along with an unidentified woman had been detained by police for questioning after the bodies of the 73-year-old lawyer and his real estate agent wife had been found at their home last week Tuesday.
The female suspect, who was arrested with the men last Wednesday, has been released pending further investigations.
On Monday night, police said that the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions had given instructions to charge the men in a case that had gained international coverage.
“We cannot rule out that there is or isn’t any person other than the persons we have charged that were involved. We will look at all leads and once we have the evidence to substantiate the fact that they were involved, again we will approach the DPP and whatever directive he gives we follow,” head of the Homicide Bureau, ACP Vincel Edwards told reporters.
Police said they believe may have been the motive behind the grisly double-murder as the bedroom and living-room had been ransacked.
The men were arrested after it was discovered that they had allegedly attempted to use a credit card belonging to Wheeler who was a partner in the law firm LEX Caribbean and was in charge of the firm’s Tobago office.
