Western Confed boys’ basketball semis decided
The semi-finalists in both sections of the ISSA Western Conference boys’ basketball competitions were decided last week after the final return-round games were played.
Despite falling one game short of going two full seasons unbeaten in the Under-16 section when they lost to Cornwall College last week, double-defending champions Herbert Morrison Technical will be the top seed in both sections.
Herbert Morrison finished the Under-16 section with 19 points, one more than Cornwall College-18. Muschett High were third on 15 points, with Holland High beating St James on tie-breaker for the fourth spot, after both ended on 14 points each.
In the semi-finals, which will be played at a date to be announced early next year, Herbert Morrison will play Holland in one game, while Cornwall College and Muschett will meet in the other.
Herbert Morrison were perfect in the Under-19 with 12 points and will face William Knibb (five points), while Muschett who were second on 10 points will face third-placed Cornwall College, who finished on seven points.
The semi-finals will be one game and the winners will advance to the finals which will be a best-of-three series.
Meanwhile, Cornwall College avenged their first-round loss and ended Herbert Morrison’s 22 games unbeaten run in western Jamaica, dating back to last season, with a 46-41 win in their rescheduled game played at Cornwall College on Friday.
Herbert Morrison led 16-7 after the first quarter and 24-17 at half-time before Cornwall rallied in the third quarter to pull within two points at 34-32 and continued the comeback in the fourth quarter to outscore the visitors 14-7.
Ojay Marshall scored 11 points to lead Cornwall College, Leacroft Lettman scored 10 points and Alwayde Thompson scored nine points, while Herbert Morrison’s Okieffe Noble led all scorers with 18 points. David Gordon scored seven points and had 10 rebounds and Ryheem Barrett scored two points, but had 19 rebounds and six blocked shots.
Herbert Morrison, however, completed the two-year sweep in the Under-19 section, winning by nine points, 63-54, as Cornwall College again trailed in the first half and made a run in the second half, but came up short. Herbert Morrison led 18-6 and 34-20 after the first two intervals. Cornwall College closed the gap slightly in the third to 48-36.
Herbert Morrison’s Devon Watson led all scorers with 26 points and 14 rebounds and Ralique Grant scored 18 points.
Antonio Spence scored 18 points and had 10 rebounds as well as five blocked shots for Cornwall College, Odane Whittaker scored 10 points and Leonardo Friginette also had 10 points.
