Portmore welcome FC Reno to Juici Park
Former winners Portmore United will hope to carry the consistency they had in 2015 into the new year when they take on fellow ex-national champions FC Reno today in Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) action at Juici Park in Clarendon.
The game is scheduled to start at 3:00 pm.
Portmore, most recently winners of the national club title in the 2011-12 edition, were relegated from top flight football for a season. However, since gaining promotion ahead of the start of this campaign they have been impressive under Head Coach Jeffrey Hewitt.
Portmore United, presently based in Clarendon, have 34 points from 18 matches and share top spot in the points table with last season’s finalists Montego Bay United. All that separates the teams is Montego Bay’s edge due to a superior goal difference.
Westmoreland-based FC Reno also endured the ignominy of demotion two seasons ago. Upon returning to the RSPL, they barely managed to stay up last season.
For the first half of this campaign they have hovered around the middle of the 12-team pack, but their hope will be that the new year sparks a positive run for the remainder of the season. Reno, guided by Technical Director Wendell Downswell, are currently seventh with 23 points, but elevating to one of the semi-final places is still realistic.
Another team anxious for a new lease on life this year is Waterhouse FC. They welcome arch rivals and reigning champions Arnett Gardens FC to Drewsland Stadium in a 6:00 pm start.
Waterhouse, last season’s semi-finalists, are in the cellar position on 15 points.
But if the positive words of new Head Coach Paul Young is anything to go by, they are turning the corner after scoring six goals in two drawn games since he took charge. Of concern to him will be the six goals they let in at the other end.
Arnett Gardens, who swept to the title so convincingly last season, have been hot and cold this time around, but remain close to the leaders. The Jerome Waite-coached team is third with 32 points.
At 3:00 pm, relegation-threatened Rivoli United, who are 11th with 17 points, entertain fifth-placed Harbour View FC (25 points) at Spanish Town Prison Oval.
Also at 3 o’ clock, University of the West Indies (UWI) FC, who are in eighth place on 22 points, welcome fourth-placed Humble Lion FC (28 points) to Mona Bowl.
At Stadium East, sixth-placed Boys’ Town FC (25 points) travel to battle 10th-placed Cavalier SC (18 points) in a 5:00 pm kick-off.
In the live televised RSPL Monday Night fixture, league leaders Montego Bay United (34 points) host ninth-placed Tivoli Gardens FC (22 points) at the Montego Bay Sports Complex in Catherine Hall.
The game is scheduled to begin at 8:40 pm.
