Chavion Chow to ride here until winter season ends
Chavion Chow, the Jamaican who recently won the jockeys’ crown at the Assiniboia Downs racetrack in Winnipeg, Canada, has returned home to ride at Caymanas Park until the winter season ends.
The 29-year-old Chow, who last rode at Caymanas Park in 2011, said that he was happy to be home.
“It is a very wonderful feeling to be home, as here at Caymanas Park was where my love for horses had developed. It is always amazing to see the fans as some of them won’t really know me, but it is good to make people know and remember you. Here will always be my home and I am happy to come back,” Chow told the Complete Racing Guide.
Chow rode 63 winners from 284 mounts to finish atop the jockeys’ standing at Assiniboia Downs racetrack ahead of Rohan Singh (55), Christopher Husbands (54), Adolfo Morales (46) and Dane Nelson (42).
“I have had a good season riding overseas, winning the jockeys’ title and all of that. That is just a wonderful accomplishment and I am pleased with how everything has turned out. Well, it is the cold time of the season now up there in Canada and to get a break is good and so I just decided to come home to ride a few horses. I won’t be here too long as I will ride until the end of March or probably early April, then I am on my way back overseas,” Chow said.
Chow shared his view on the racing surface at Caymanas Park and the ones he has ridden on overseas.
“The racing surface out here (Caymanas Park) and the ones up there are not a lot different, but one thing for sure, Caymanas Park racetrack is much bigger though. The jockeys here ride a little bit more aggressive than the ones up there, but overall riding here and riding up there is just the same,” Chow explained. He has a career of 188 winners from 1,551 mounts with earnings of CAN$1,698,840.
