Bonner shines before rain forces early end
BASSETERRE, St Kitts (CMC) — Jamaican Nkrumah Bonner stroked an entertaining half-century but rain forced the abandonment of the Leeward Islands Hurricanes’ opening game of the Regional Super50 after only 38 overs at Warner Park here Thursday.
Opting to bat first in the day/night encounter against Combined Campuses and Colleges Marooners, Hurricanes had reached 187 for five when the adverse weather ended the game prematurely.
Both teams were awarded two points.
In the time available, Bonner hammered 65 off 69 deliveries with six fours while opener Shane Jeffers hit 47 and left-handed partner Chesney Hughes, 28.
The pair put on 68 for the first wicket with Jeffers striking five fours and a six off 75 balls and Hughes, one four and a six, in a 36-ball knock.
However, seasoned left-arm spinner Ryan Hinds knocked over both Jeffers and Sherwin Peters, without scoring, with the score on 68 within the space of four deliveries in the 14th over, to set back the innings.
Jeffers and Bonner attempted to repair the innings with a 30-run fourth-wicket stand before Jeffers finally perished in the 24th over at 98 for three.
Bonner, who showed good form in the four-day competition, then spearheaded two partnerships to extend the Hurricanes’ recovery. He put on 40 for the fourth wicket with Orlando Peters (15) before adding a further 45 for the fifth wicket with wicketkeeper Jahmar Hamilton who was unbeaten on a brisk 23 from 22 balls when the rains arrived.
