Matthews misses out on Big Bash final as Hurricanes lose
MELBOURNE, Australia (CMC) — Teenaged West Indies batting star Hayley Matthews missed out on a chance to play in the final of the Australian Big Bash League when her Hobart Hurricanes suffered a ten-wicket defeat to Sydney Sixers in a rain-affected second semi-final here yesterday.
Playing at the MCG in a contest reduced to 14 overs, Hurricanes gathered 86 for eight after opting to bat first with Erin Burns hitting 26 off 27 deliveries with four fours and Amy Satterthwaite stroking a run-a-ball 24 with three boundaries.
The pair put on 38 for the third wicket before falling in the space of three deliveries in the 11th over.
Matthews, whose form in the tournament has been ordinary, managed just five from three balls faced before falling to a catch at the wicket off seamer Saray Aley in the 12th over.
Off-spinner Lisa Sthalekar captured three for nine.
Set a revised target of 55 off eight overs following another rain interruption, Sixers romped to victory in style without losing a wicket.
Wicketkeeper Alyssa Healy finished unbeaten on 32 off 22 balls, while captain Ellyse Perry scored 22 not out off 16 deliveries.
In Sunday’s final, Sixers will face Sydney Thunder which features West Indies captain Stafanie Taylor.
