Copperwood score first win in St James football
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Copperwood FC won its first game this season after holding off Salt Spring Roses 3-2 in their St James Football Association Sandals/ATL Division One competition at Albion.
All five goals were scored in the first 35 minutes of the game that threatened to get into double figures after its explosive start.
Copperwood FC had lost two of their three games, plus, drawing the other, before finally tasting victory and moving off the foot of the points’ table and into third place in Zone Two.
At the UDC field, Rushane Bull scored twice as Salt Spring United thrashed 10-man Irwin FC 5-1, while Club Stars and Revelations FC drew 1-1 at Wyndham.
Copperwood opened the season with a 0-10 loss to Montego Bay United then lost their opening Division One game 0-4 to Bogue FC before drawing 3-3 with Seaview FC in their last game.
On Thursday, Enrico Campbell scored twice, in the fourth and 13th minutes, to get them off to a good start before Salt Spring Roses struck back to draw 2-2 through Akeem Palmer in the 26th minute and Clive Rhoden in the 30th minute.
Adrian Sergeant restored Copperwood FC’s lead when he scored what turned out to be the winner in the 35th minute.
At the UDC field, Salt Spring United played in patches but did enough to beat Irwin FC, with Bull scoring in the seventh and 81st minutes, Lavardo Whyte in the 17th minute, Raheem Smith in the 76th minute, and Gary Fyfee in the 84th minute.
Irwin FC’s only response was a fortuitous penalty scored in the 55th minute by Calwayne Allen.
They finished the game with only 10 players after Andrew Gaylor was sent off midway the second half.
At Wyndham, Orlando Gilpin gave visiting Revelations FC the lead in the eighth minute only for Jamar Johnson to equalise in the 15th minute for Club Stars.
