30 schools to compete in today’s Western Champs eliminations
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Thirty schools, led by defending champions St Elizabeth Technical High (STETHS) and including newcomers Aberdeen High, will be seeking to kick-start their quest for honours in the Digicel/County of Cornwall Athletics Association’s Boys’ Western Champs at today’s eliminations at Herbert Morrison Technical, starting at 10:00 am.
Knockalva Technical and Lewisville High have also returned to the competition after a few years away.
Fifteen finals are scheduled to be completed today, one on the track —the 3000m Open — while the others are field events — three in the long jump, four in the high jump, three in the discus throw, three in the shot put and the javelin open.
The boys will be hoping to match Tuesday’s Girls Eliminations that saw two records been broken, both by STETH’s Sahjay Stevens in the Javelin Open and Shot Put Class 1.
For the third year, Rusea’s High lead after the girls eliminations, amassing 134 points after 15 finals at the Collin Miller Sports Complex in Lucea on Tuesday.
Defending champions STETHS are in second with 86 points, followed by Petersfield on 64, Herbert Morrison Technical on 35.5, with Frome Technical and Green Pond High tied on 30 points each.
Stevens, who represented the national junior team last year, broke the 14-year-old record of 37.85m in the javelin Open, set by William Knibb Memorial’s Shereta Harriott in 2002, with a new mark of 38.78m.
Hours earlier she had won the Class 1 Shot Put with 12.91m, beating the 12.01m set by Mannings School’s Tamara Dayes in 1998.
She picked up a third medal on the day, silver in the Class 1 Discus Throw, finishing behind Petersfield’s Shyledeen Smith who won with 41.09m.
Petersfield’s Colistia Baker was also a double winner, taking the Class 1 Long and High Jump gold medals.
