Distin, Wilson outjump the field
High school students Lamara Distin of Vere Technical High and Lushane Wilson of St Jago High won the women’s and men’s high jump events, respectively, at yesterday’s 40th staging of the Gibson/McCook Relays at the National Stadium.
Distin, the former CARIFTA Games Under-18 champion who will miss the ISSA National Girls Championships next month after transferring from Rusea’s High, cleared 1.75m, the same as second-placed Tamoya Walters of Exed Community College.
Hydel’s Britney Kerr was third with 1.70m, the same as Edwin Allen High’s Janique Burgher.
St Jago High’s IAAF World Youth Championships and Commonwealth Youth Games finalist Wilson won the men’s high jump with a clearance of 2.05m, beating Calabar High’s Leroy Paige, who cleared 2.00m. UTech Track Club’s Tajay Gayle was third, also with 2.00m.
The University of Technology’s Damar Whyte followed up his win at the Milo Western Relays two week-ends ago by winning the men’s long jump with 7.37m (-1.3m/s).
He had just two jumps over 7.00m and just seven marks over the distance was recorded in the competition.
Jamaica College’s Obrien Wasome was second with 7.21m (-0.3m/s), achieved on his final attempt, with GC Foster’s Laurel Gordon taking third with 7.17m (-0.9m/s).
Former St Andrew High standout Todea Kay Willis won the women’s long jump with a wnd-aided 6.27m (2.7m/s), beating UTech’s Jessica Noble with 6.25m (1.6m/s) and UWI-Mona’s Shanika Thomas, who registered 6.00m.
Akeem Kerr of Jamaica College won the pole vault Open with 3.80m, same height as Excelsior High’s Michael Williams, with Jamaica College’s Dane Smith taking third with a height of 3.60m.
On the track, athletes coached by Maurice Wilson, swept the top three places in the women’s 100m as former Edwin Allen sprinter Gayon Evans, representing Sprintech, won in 11.45 seconds (-0.6m/s), just holding off Audra Segree of GC Foster (11.49 seconds), while Dianna Johnson, also of GC Foster, was third in 11.98 seconds.
Kavean Smith of UTech was the men’s 100m winner, clocking 10.34 seconds (-0.3m/s); Collin King of GC Foster was second in 10.47 seconds and another UTech runner Kwesi McFarlane was third in 10.64 seconds.
St Jago’s Alesha Kelly won the women’s 400m Open in 53.58 seconds beating Naminia’s Tjipekapora Herunga, who ran 53.69 seconds and Hydel High’s Romeisha McGregor took third in 1 minute 5.50 seconds.
Demish Gaye of GC Foster won the men’s quarter-mile in 45.75 seconds, second fastest in the world so far this year and best at sea level, with his teammate Alvin Green second in 47.47 seconds and Virjillo Griggs of Cameron Blazers third in 47.60 seconds.
Former Munro College runner Delano Williams, who now represents Great Britain and was a medallist in the World Championships 4x400m relay last year, faded to fourth.
Hydel High’s Monifa Green won the one-mile run Open in 5:11.76 minutes, beating GC Foster’s Danielle James (5:15.59) and Jade Jones of Hydel was third in 5:16.82.
