THE JAMAICA ENVIRONMENT TRUST (JET)
The Jamaica Environment Trust (JET) and Nuh Dutty Up Jamaica congratulates the Jamaica Observer for highlighting Jamaica’s very serious solid waste management problems. As we face the threats of diseases which thrive in conditions created by poor sanitation practices, it is long past time that we developed modern waste management habits and practices. Every Jamaican must take responsibility for his own waste and never litter. The State must provide improved garbage infrastructure, such as more bins, and regular, reliable collection. Regulation of garbage dumps by legal permits and licenses is urgently needed, as well as general enforcement of laws relating to littering and dumping. While there is some recycling taking place, it needs to be expanded and made much easier for citizens. We live on a small island and there is no “away” to send our waste to. It should sadden all of us when, after rain, we see the amount of garbage that washes into the sea to wash up on the beaches we say we love and provide economic opportunities to many. We can do better and we must do better.
