Action, not mere words – JET
Jamaica Environment Trust (JET), one of the staunchest critics of government’s stewardship of the environment, says it is not concerned that a new political administration under the Jamaica Labour Party may shutter or otherwise do away with a ministry dedicated to climate change.
While ministries named for the environment have existed under various nomenclature over the years, climate change was only added — vis Ministry of Land, Water, Environment and Climate Change — when the People’s National Party took office in 2012.
“I don’t think just adding the words ‘climate change’ to a ministry is what we need. JET is focused on how the environment ministry performs, rather than what it is called,” JET CEO Diana McCaulay told the Jamaica Observer.
“We hope the new PM chooses his environmental minister carefully.”
