Spot Valley make winning start in ISSA Western Conference basketball
HOLLAND, Trelawny — Defending champions Spot Valley High got off to a winning start in the ISSA Western Conference Girls’ Open basketball competition after beating Holland High 24-16 at Holland High on Friday afternoon.
Former champions Mt Alvernia High, who are seeking a third straight-place in the final, scored their second straight win, a 28-20 victory over Muschett High, while Rhodes Hall were also winners, beating Montego Bay High 47-10.
In the second game of the double-header at Holland, the defending champions had a decisive second quarter where they outscored the home team 9-0 to take control of the game after they were deadlocked at 4-4 in the first quarter.
Nassan-Gay Ricketts had a double-double of 19 points and 12 rebounds to lead Spot Valley to the win, while Holland High’s top scorer was Shanneil Johnson with six points.
At Mt Alvernia, Cheryl-Lee Reid scored a game-high 12 points and Carina Wallace had six points and 14 rebounds as the home team shook off a good challenge from the former national champions to run out winners and take the lead with four points.
Rochel Mason scored 11 points to lead Muschett High, while Natieka Bell had six points and eight rebounds.
Rodene Morris scored 25 points and had 10 steals and six rebounds to lead Rhodes Hall to their easy win over Montego Bay High with Tiany Nelson also contributing 12 points.
Olivia Simms had 10 points for the Montego Bay team who were losing back-to-back games.
