Full house at Bacchanal
DROVES of soca-hungry patrons streamed into Mas Camp, St Andrew, for Bacchanal Fridays, on the weekend. They were making up for last week’s cancellation due to the general election.
“The night could not have gone better. We sold out, more importantly there were plenty of fresh new faces and I’m sure they’ll be back next week,” Michael Ammar Jr, a director of Bacchanal Jamaica, told the Jamaica Observer.
Trinidad and Tobago’s Private Ryan and Jamaican selector Creep from Chromatic were trusted to represent the evening’s theme Soca vs Dancehall. Ryan told the Observer that both genres had something in common: they draw plenty energy from the crowd.
“It’s been a good year for soca, but it will take a while to see what songs rise to the top throughout the rest of the Jamaican Carnival season,” he added.
In his set, he mixed in several of 2016’s tracks including Cheers for Life by Voice, Machel Montano’sHuman, Mon Bon Ami from Angela Hunte, and Allez. However, towards the end of his set, Ryan played a bit of dancehall. After the baton change, Creep continued with the dancehall tracks and keeping the audience dancing as they traded sets into the early morning.
Bacchanal Fridays continues on March 11 with a 2-for-1 cooler fete.
“It’s two in for the price of one ticket. General admission can bring in their drinks. There will still be a VIP bar and one in general,” Ammar Jr added.
