12-y-o dies in fire as Westmoreland police also investigate shooting death
WESTMORELAND, Jamaica — Detectives attached to the Bethel Town Police Station are now investigating the circumstances surrounding two deaths in Cornwall Mountain, Westmoreland, that occurred on Friday and Saturday.
According to the Corporate Communications Unit, in the first incident that occurred about 6:30 pm, 12-year-old Ajay Stewart was burnt to death in a fire that engulfed his home.
Then about 12:50 am while cooling down operations were being conducted and the scene was being processed, police say explosions were heard coming from another area of the community.
The police say they went to investigate and found the lifeless body of 47-year-old Michael Mair with multiple gunshot wounds. That crime scene was also processed.
Although the police have not stated whether or not the two incidents are linked, they are appealing to residents of the Cornwall Mountain to remain calm and allow investigators to carry out their duties as “swiftly and efficiently” as possible.
The police are also asking anyone who may be able to assist them in their investigation to contact the Bethel Town police at 957-1658, police 119 emergency number or the nearest police station.
