Over $10m fleeced for motor vehicle purchase
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Detectives from the Counter-Terrorism and Organised Crime Investigation Branch (C-TOC) on Friday arrested and charged 47-year-old Chris Barrett, Air Condition Technician of Park Avenue, Havendale, St Andrew with obtaining money by means of false pretence.
Reports are that between February 2013 and September 2015 nine individuals gave Barrett more than J$10 million to purchase motor vehicles on auction on their behalf. After collecting payments, Barrett gave several excuses for not being able to purchase the requested vehicles.
Efforts by the complainants to contact him for a refund were unsuccessful. The matter was then reported to the Fraud Squad, resulting in Barrett being arrested and charged with nine counts of obtaining money by means of false pretence.
He is to appear in the Corporate Area Criminal Court on Thursday.
