Boys’ and Girls’ Champs 2016: Calabar’s Taylor erases 400m record
KINGSTON, Jamaica — It might only be day one of the highly anticipated ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships but Calabar’s Christopher Taylor means business.
The young prodigy a short while ago clocked a superb 46.33 seconds to establish the first record of the event’s 106th staging, which is now under way at the National Stadium in Kingston.
Taylor, running from lane four in the very first heat of the boys’ class two 400-metre went out hard and covered the field on the backstretch, before accelerating over the last 100 metres.
The 16-year-old, dubbed the ‘Wonderkid’, erased the previous mark of 46.64 seconds set by Devaughn Baker of Jamaica College in 2013, as he threw down the gauntlet on day one and set the stage for what is expected over the next four days at the five-day showpiece event.
