Hugh Buchanan resigns as St Elizabeth South West chairman
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Former People’s National Party (PNP) member of Parliament Hugh Buchanan has resigned as chairman of the St Elizabeth South West constituency.
Buchanan declined to disclose the reasons for his resignation but told OBSERVER ONLINE that he informed the party on Thursday in a letter which was “quite brief”.
Asked about his future, he said “I wish to keep [to myself] what my plans are for now”.
Buchanan lost the St Elizabeth South West seat to the Jamaica Labour Party’s (JLP) Floyd Green in the February 25 General Elections after being challenged by former banker and businessman Ewan Stephenson to represent the PNP in the constituency.
The constituency is among the classic swing seats in Jamaican politics. In 2007, the JLP’s Christopher Tufton won St Elizabeth SW by close to 2,000 votes. But in December 2011, Tufton lost to Buchanan by 13 votes.
