Donaldson eager to get the ball rolling
Clayton Donaldson has barely had 120 minutes playing international football, but after finding the net for an important victory during his first full international away to Haiti last November, the big striker is eager for more success with Jamaica’s Reggae Boyz.
And though he suffered a torn groin in that match, which incurred the wrath of his club manager as well as sidelined him for six weeks, his desire to notch his third cap remains as insatiable as ever.
“Excited to be back and to help Jamaica progress in this little tournament we are having at the group stages at the moment, but yeah it’s good to get my first start and to get the goal and, more importantly, to get the win for Jamaica, that’s most important,” Donaldson told the Jamaica Observer shortly upon arrival in the island on Monday.
“I’m back now and hopefully I can help them even more.”
Having recovered from his groin injury, the Birmingham City frontman revealed that he has recovered fully and has been in good trim, having played regularly for 90 minutes and finding the net in a few games.
“I have been playing regularly, obviously I injured myself in my last game without actually knowing what I did; I tore my groin, so I was out for six weeks having rehabs, so that put me back a little bit, but now I have been playing for the last two months, 90 minutes regularly, so I’m fit and ready to go,” he added.
Donaldson believes that he made an impact on his debut against Panama and gained from the experience, though the team generally didn’t do well on the night.
However, on his return home the club realised that he had torn his groin and manager Gary Rowett was livid and very scathing in his remarks about the Jamaican management team.
“I was aware of it, but that was something for the club and Jamaica to deal with. I didn’t want to get involved in that, so I just let them deal with it and I think they did deal with it in the end without actually putting too much pressure on me, so I was just able to continue and get on with my football,” explained Donaldson.
For tomorrow, he hopes the Boyz can get their act together and turn around their recent home fortunes.
“It is going to be a tough game, but at home we haven’t got the best results recently, we are trying to change that and hopefully we can do so on Friday.”
