Family, friends celebrate Evelyn Scott’s 100th birthday
It was about music, food, dance, and remembering the ‘good old days’ when family and friends came together on March 16 to celebrate Evelyn Scott’s 100th birthday.
The large number of persons who filled Scott’s home was an indication of the love and respect for the Content Gardens, St Ann, woman.
“It is a great feeling,” an ecstatic Scott said as she greeted the many family members, friends, comprising adults and children who were present.
The charming Scott also tried to get her dancing shoes on. However, age would not allow her to do some of her favourite dance moves for long.
In spite of being unable to stand for extended periods, Scott is a healthy centenarian, family members said.
During the event, family and friends all shared fond memories of her as they indulged in the festivities.
Scott was born in Coconut Grove, Ocho Rios, on March 16, 1916. If there was any doubt about her age, because she looked many years younger than a century, she has her national identification card to show. Additionally, her 78-year-old son and 81-year-old daughter were also testament to her many years.
The mother of three, one of whom predeceased her, was spoken of as a “very peaceful person” who loves persons around her. At 100 years old, she continues to greet people with a smile and a warm hug.
Rupert Brown, her son, was among those who spoke fondly of his mother.
“A nuh show mi show off, but she never touch mi one day with a stick,” Brown said.
He said that, at 100 years, his mother is a “very healthy” woman.
“She keep good health; we just take her to the doctor for check-up,” Brown explained, insisting that his mother does not suffer from any illnesses.
Highlighting her strength, he emphasised that she was one of the persons who helped to care for her own daughter before she died in 2007.
Brown said that his mother, who worked as a housekeeper during her early years, loves dancing.
Scott’s granddaughter, Paulette Martin, described her grandmother as a loving person.
“She is peaceful, always smiling, and always has good encouragement,” Martin said.
She also spoke of her grandmother’s outstanding health ts 100 years old.
“Mi tell her mi taking her to the doctor the other day and she say a mi fi go, because mi too fat,” Martin said.
Martin also spoke of the foods that her grandmother loves.
“She likes mashed potatoes and baked chicken,” she said. However, Martin said Scott prefers drinking than eating.
“She hates rice,” she added.
Scott was also remembered for the kindness she showed to community children. Several people who celebrated her birthday with her said she was always treating them like her own.
In addition to the party at her house, Scott, who attends the Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Ocho Rios, was feted when she visited church recently.
