A Thousand Stars heads straight to Guineas
Elizabeth DaCosta’s A Thousand Stars announced that she must not be forgotten in the conversation leading up to the season’s first Classic race, the April 9, 1,000 Guineas (Fillies), although Nuclear Affair and Sorrentino’s Star are the deserved headliners.
A Thousand Stars (Storm Craft – Heart Of Gold by Natural Selection) looked really impressive when winning a maiden condition race over 1,500 metres by nine-and-a-half lengths at Caymanas Park last Saturday.
Trained by Wayne DaCosta and ridden by Robert Halledeen, A Thousand Stars was well away from the number two post and quickly settled into third position behind Zephyr (Jerome Innis) and Running Star (Shane Ellis).
As the 12 runners sorted themselves out approaching the half-mile, Running Star assumed pole position but A Thousand Stars, in a flash, drew alongside her coming into the straight and she pulled away at the 300-metre marker to score an easy win in the end.
Running Star managed to hold on to second position ahead of Francia’s Pride (Jodeien Anderson) and Ignition, the mount of Odean Edwards.
While A Thousand Stars was officially timed in 1:35:3 minutes behind splits of 23:4, 47:1 and 1:13:1 minutes for the distance, DaCosta credited the dark bay filly for her impressive run.
“It was a good performance by A Thousand Stars today (Saturday). “There was a strong breeze blowing down the straight so the time was going to be slow.
She basically sat off the pace and won going away which is a good sign because in the Guineas (1,000) and the Oaks you will need stamina and she certainly has answered that question today,” DaCosta told the Complete Racing Guide.
When asked about his charge’s chance in the 1,000 Guineas going over a mile, DaCosta said: “One thing for sure, she will definitely stay the distance whether she has the class to win the Guineas or not, but she is going to stay.”
