69 confirmed H1N1 cases, 7 deaths so far
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Dr Winston De La Haye, acting chief medical officer in the Ministry of Health, says the number of confirmed cases of the H1N1 virus is now at 69.
Up to last Tuesday, the number of confirmed cases stood at 66.
Speaking to OBSERVER ONLINE earlier today, De La Haye said the number of H1N1-related deaths has climbed to seven. Two doctors were among those who died after contracting the virus.
Earlier this month, the ministry said the antiviral medication Tamiflu, used in the treatment of the H1N1 (Influenza A) virus, was to be made available at all pharmacies across the island. The medication was previously only available through hospital pharmacies.
Tamiflu is only used to treat symptoms in severely affected patients and does not prevent illness. The ministry said that it has shored up supply of the medication available through hospital pharmacies.
