No penalty for ‘bury it’ response to GSAT flag question
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Ministry of Education, Youth and Information says students in the recent Grade Six Achievement Test (GSAT) who said the correct method to dispose of a worn Jamaican flag is to bury it, will not be disadvantaged.
In a news release Tuesday afternoon, the ministry said it has received queries about the correct answer for the question which was posed in the Social Studies examination.
“The correct answer, based on the protocol published by the Jamaica Information Service, is that ‘the damaged flag should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning privately’,” the ministry said.
However, the Ministry said it is aware that some approved textbooks indicate that the Jamaican flag can be disposed of “by burying” it.
Therefore, the ministry said in the marking of the examination paper, the ministry will ensure that students who gave the answer as “bury it” will not be at a disadvantage.
