Quake jolts parts of Jamaica
A minor earthquake on Sunday night jolted parts of the island, the Earthquake Unit at the University of the West Indies, Mona, has confirmed.
The Unit said the magnitude-3.5 quake had a focal depth of 2.8 kilometres. It was felt at approximately 11:42 pm, in the parishes of Clarendon, St Catherine, Manchester and St Elizabeth and the epicentre was near Thompson Town in Clarendon.
Sunday night’s quake followed at least two tremors which rattled several Caribbean countries two Saturdays ago.
The UW Seismic Research Centre (SRC), based in Trinidad, said then that the first quake occurred at 7:26 am (local time) and was registered with a magnitude of 6.5 while the second tremor which occurred at 7:34 am registered 3.9.
The SRC said that the epicentre of both quakes was generally the same area, with the first located at 161 kilometres (km) north-east of Antigua and Barbuda; 218 km north-east of Guadeloupe and 237 km north east of St Kitts-Nevis at a depth of 10 km.
