Win the ‘hunger games’, Windies!
Dear Editor,
It has been an absolute privilege witnessing the suspense, action, and high drama that is the 2016 ICC World T20. The games have been hugely entertaining and quite pulsating, to say the least.
Among those most responsible for the ‘Hollywood’ intrigue, and the exciting unpredictability of this tournament, is the West Indies. Apparently the Caribbean boys are unable to win or lose in a dull or straightforward manner. I warn you; their games are not for the faint of heart.
The last two games especially — against Sri Lanka and Afghanistan respectively — were reminiscent of, and exceedingly comparable to a Universal Studios roller-coaster ride. My nerves and emotions shifted from one extreme to the next, seemingly, with every ball that was bowled. Needless to say, I am now a nervous wreck.
With that being said, I am very excited — and a little scared — at the prospect of facing the hosts in the semi-finals. This is yet another opportunity to showcase our talents on the subcontinent and to reach another showcase final.
If I know one thing, though, it’s that we as Jamaicans, and West Indians by a larger extent, delight in conquering East Indians; whether it be a sweet, juicy mango or a cricket team. With the competition now at its semi-final stage, all remaining teams are now two wins away from fulfilling their undeniable craving — the sweet taste of victory!
To the maroon-clad entertainers, I wish you best of luck. Go forth and win thy hunger games, and may the odds forever be in your favour!
