Heaven fends off Harris challenge in JCA presidential elections
After being returned as president of the Jamaica Cricket Association, Wilford ‘Billy’ Heaven said he was surprised by the narrow margin of victory over challenger Fritz Harris during yesterday’s annual general meeting hosted at the Jamaica Conference Centre.
Only moments after being declared the winner by a vote of 52-47, Heaven told members of the media that he was “a little surprised” but added that a “victory is a victory”. In apparent reference to the close finish the recent General Elections, Heaven quipped that elections have been close this year.
Harris, who was honorary secretary during Heaven’s previous two-year tenure, said he was “disappointed”, but accepted that delegates “chose to keep the incumbent in office”.
Heaven is the chief executive officer of the state-run Culture, Health, Arts, Sports and Education (CHASE) Fund.
Harris is an educator by profession and one with experience in the insurance industry. He has served as secretary throughout a number of different JCA administrations.
Up to press time late yesterday, the results for the remaining executive posts and the names of the new board of directors were not announced.
The executive posts include first vice-president, second vice-president, honorary secretary, assistant secretary, treasurer and assistant treasurer.
