Shaw opens budget debate May 12
MINISTER of Finance and the Public Service will open the 2016/17 Budget Debate in the House of Representatives on Thursday, May 12.
Shaw’s opening presentation will be followed by the contribution from the Opposition’s spokesman on finance, Dr Peter Phillips, on Tuesday, May 17.
Leader of the Opposition Portia Simpson Miller will speak on Thursday, May 19; and Prime Minister Andrew Holness on Tuesday, May 24.
Shaw will close the debate on Wednesday, May 25.
The estimates will be tabled on Thursday, April 14, following the ceremonial opening of Parliament for the new session. This event also includes the joint sitting of both Houses of Parliament at 11:00 am, following the inspection of a Jamaica Defence Force Guard of Honour by the Governor General Sir Patrick Allen, who will also delivered the Throne Speech.
Following the tabling of the estimates, they will be reviewed by both the auditor general and the Public Administration and Appropriations Committee, which is chaired by Opposition MP Dr Wykeham McNeill.
The Standing Finance Committee, which comprises all 63 members of Parliament, will do the final review between May 3 and 5.
