Montagliani humbled by show of Caribbean support
CONCACAF presidential candidate Victor Montagliani got the official endorsements of four Caribbean members as his vision of “ONE CONCACAF” seems to be gaining traction.
The election to fill the vacant post of CONCACAF president has three vying for the position, including Bermuda’s Larry Mussenden and Antigua and Barbuda’s Gordon Derrick, the current president of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU).
The May 12 polls slated for an ordinary congress in Mexico City, opens up a new ball game with a lively challenge for the position, moving away from the coronations that have taken place in the past.
As far back as reliable memory goes, the 31-member CFU has voted en bloc, maintaining a tradition of rallying around one candidate. But this time around, the vote is expected to be scattered.
With Cuba, Haiti, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic publicly declaring their support for the Canadian Montagliani validates a clear differing of opinions in the CFU on who is best suited to lead the embattled sub-continental grouping into the future.
“I would like to thank the federations and presidents of Haiti, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and Cuba for their endorsement of not only my candidacy, but also the vision of ONE CONCACAF. Together we can make a difference in a new CONCACAF,” Montagliani said shortly after a meeting with association heads in the Dominican Republic last week.
The Canadian used the opportunity on his recent visit to the Caribbean to drive home his vision via his campaign mantra of ONE CONCACAF, which seeks in part the unity and development of all CONCACAF member associations.
Montagliani bases his electoral manifesto on the foundation on “proper planning, unity and respect for all associations in the region”.
In a release, Canadian football boss underlined his vision of “a unified and global CONCACAF”. He also stressed the need of returning “solidity and restoring the image of the whole region in the eyes of the general public and of the sponsors”, who demand good governance, honestly and transparency.
Montagliani has already received unanimous support from North and Central America.
At the Dominican Republic meeting, presidents Yves Jean-Bart (HaitÃ), LuÃs Hernández (Cuba), Eric Labrador (Puerto Rico) and Osiris Guzmán Delgado (Dominican Republic) were in attendance.
