Charly Black goes universal
SINGER Charly Black’s’ Gyal You A Party Animal, released two years ago, has got a new lease on life after been picked up by Universal Music Latin Entertainment.
The song — produced by Kurt Riley for Techniques Records — is featured on the Jambe-an rhythm. Last year, it was licensed to French company P2S Records, which did a sub-licensing deal with Universal Music Latin Entertainment, a division of Universal Music Group.
Universal Music Latin Entertainment was formed in 2008. Among the acts it has worked with are Jenni Rivera, Don Omar and Daddy Yankee.
Gyal You A Party Animal has done well in key Latin markets including Colombia, Peru and Ecuador.
Riley credits the song’s success to “a fusion of dancehall, soca and Latin rhythms. This is not a regular record”.
Promotion of the song has already begun in North America, with the legendary Casablanca Records spearheading promotions alongside Republic Records, another label under the Universal umbrella.
Overseas success is not new for Charly Black, whose real name is Desmond Mendez. Wine and Kotch, his collaboration with J Capri, was a minor hit in Europe four years ago.
Originally from Rio Bueno, Trelawny, he started as a selector on Montego Bay sound system, Warlord International. He moved to Bass Odyssey out of St Ann, of which he is still a member.
Formerly known as Tony Mentol, he made his recording debut in 2004 with Woman It’s You.
