Gay confirmed
American Tyson Gay has been added to the men’s 100m field for the May 7 Jamaica International Invitational, an IAAF World Challenge meet at the National Stadium, the organisers have confirmed to the Jamaica Observer.
Gay, the World Championships sprint double gold medallist in 2007 in Osaka, Japan, joins his compatriots Mike Rogers and Ryan Bailey, who were earlier confirmed in the short sprint.
The 33-year-old American whose personal best 9.69 seconds makes him the second fastest man of all times behind Jamaica’s Usain Bolt, was in Jamaica last year but did not run.
He had lined up in 2013 but was disqualified after he false-started in the race that was won by Nesta Carter.
A number of big name athletes have been confirmed for the meet including Jamaica’s World and Olympic champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce; World Championships 100m hurdles gold medallist Danielle Williams, World Championships 200m silver medallist Elaine Thompson, who also added an Indoor 60m bronze last month, Commonwealth Games 200m champion Rasheed Dwyer, Canadian sprint sensation Andre De Grasse, former World Record holder Asafa Powell and American World Championships and Olympic Games gold medallist Sanya Richards-Ross.
All four members of the Jamaica women’s 4x400m team that won the gold medal at the World Championships last year, led by bronze medallist Shericka Jackson and including former winners Novlene Williams-Mills, Stephenie-Ann McPherson and Christine Day are also down to compete at the event.
