WHAT THEY SAY – Jeffrey Mordecai
When did you start your career as an owner?
I started my career as an owner over 30 years ago; however, I was involved in the sport from a longer time through my father. From I was eight years old, I have been coming to Caymanas Park. I was bitten by mosquitoes every morning, so I would say I have been in the sport of horse racing since the better part of the last 50 years. Back then and now, I am still enjoying the game.
Which horse was your first winner?
It was a very long time ago so I don’t remember my first winner as an owner. What I do remember is that the feeling was very great; it was a feeling that you never felt before. It was truly a great moment for me winning my first race.
Which horse was your longest odds winner?
This I don’t remember either. I look into the future and not into the past. I enjoy every day and hope I live long enough to be here other days at the racetrack.
Which is the best horse that you have owned?
Perfect Neighbour, Future King is coming along very fast and Chadman, who was named after my son, is the third best. Perfect Neighbour is a very talented, versatile horse, who always runs good races. Unfortunately, he didn’t win the Triple Crown, as he lost the 2,000 Guineas by a neck and then won the Derby and St Leger. He was also unlucky in the Superstakes where he was interfered with. Future King, who is the champion two-year-old of last season, is a very nice and talented horse who is improving quickly. His performance to win the 2,000 Guineas was excellent, so we will see how he will perform in the Derby and St Leger. Chadman was a nice horse also.
Which is the best horse that you have seen race at Caymanas Park?
The best horse that I have seen race at Caymanas Park … Miracle Man by far. When he (Miracle Man) went abroad to run in the Classic race, he showed them four gears in the race and I have never seen any Jamaican horse do that before. Every time they (other horses) tested him on the lead, he found another gear and went on to win. I believe that when he won that international race he had another gear left in him to deal with any other horse who wanted to press him. He was really a champion, a great racehorse in my book.
Who influenced your career the most?
In the racing industry, Wayne DaCosta. DaCosta in my view is the best trainer, and he has been the secret behind my success in the sport.
