GEORGETOWN, Guyana (CMC) — A divorced mother of three, will re-appear in court on May 11, charged with using social media to send certain messages with “exciting hostility and ill” towards President David Granger.

Chief Magistrate Ann Mc Lennan granted Bibi Safora Salim GUY$200,000 (One Guyana dollar = US$0.004 cents) bail when she appeared before her charged with exciting hostility and ill to President David Granger under Guyana’s Racial Hostility Act by communicating certain messages via Facebook and WhatsApp.

The East Bank Essequibo resident pleaded not guilty to attempting to excite hostility and ill will towards the Guyanese leader on Facebook between March 1 and 31, 2016.

Police also said that between March 1 and 31 via Whatsapp, she attempted to excite hostility and ill will to Granger by making a derogatory remark by sending to her son Mohamed Salim by cellular phone a picture with racial comments.

Her attorney, Euclin Gomes, argued that the accused was not technologically savvy, but the prosecution disagreed, saying that she is not technologically challenged as she used a password to gain access to the computer.
