Maverley, Barbican into Super League final
Roberto Fletcher scored a priceless extra-time goal for Maverley/Hughenden FC to march into the Charley’s JB Rum/KSAFA Super League football final with a 2-1 victory against Rockfort FC in the feature semi-final game at Constant Spring field Friday night.
In the opening game of the evening’s double-header, Gregg Taylor scored in minutes 52 and 81, while Nicholas Smith netted in the 32nd minute as Barbican FC beat Browns’ Town FC 3-0.
In the feature encounter, Maverley took majority control of the first half and duly took the lead through the goal-poaching forward Omari Edwards in minute 23. Delano Pottinger equalised for Rockfort in the 56th, but Fletcher sealed the issue in the 103rd minute.
The opening goal came as a result of a deftly chipped ball by Andrew Peddler, from which Edwards rose to meet and headed home before the Rockfort FC goalkeeper Neil Morgan could react.
Maverley continued to lay siege in the Rockfort goal area and created scoring opportunities, but failed to increase the advantage.
For their first-half profligacy, Maverley were made to work overtime as 11 minutes after the resumption, Pottinger equalised for Rockfort FC seconds after coming on as a substitute for Narado Prawl.
Pottinger was allowed to run unmolested from just below the half line to beat goalkeeper Damian Williams to his right with a powerful shot.
Following the equaliser Rockfort continued to dictate terms, but Maverley held on and forced the game into extra time.
By then, Maverley’s Coach Hugh “Bingi” Blair had made two telling changes, replacing Nigel Reid with Andrew White in midfield, and Fletcher for Phillip Peddie in attack.
It provided the boost Maverley needed, with Fletcher striking the winner.
