Police group wants gov’t to provide transportation for cops
KINGSTON, Jamaica (CMC) – The Police Federation, the body that represents rank and file policemen and women, has called on the government to fulfil a promise to provide transportation for members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF).
Chairman of the Police Federation, Sergeant Raymond Wilson, issued the appeal Friday following the death of female Corporal Judith Williams who was shot multiple times while at a bus stop.
The police report that early Thursday, Williams, 54, was at a bus stop in the Corporate Area , heading to work, when she was shot by two gunmen who escaped on a motorcycle .
She succumbed to her injuries on Friday.
According to Wilson, since 2007, the Federation has asked successive governments to re-introduce a transportation system for members of the police force.
He said the previous administration did not make good on its promise to provide a bus to transport cops by the end of last year.
He added that the issue was again discussed during a recent meeting with newly appointed National Security minister Robert Montague.
“We will be seeking the urgent delivery of at least one or two buses that can kick start the process and we will take it from there. But it is more urgent now than ever,” Wilson said.
As investigations continue into the murder of the policewoman, the police have detained a man in connection with the incident.
