Yesterday rocks Mas Camp
THE music of the 1990s brought out thousands of patrons to Mas Camp in St Andrew last Saturday.
It was another successful staging of the popular retro music voyage called Wray and Nephew White Overproof Rum Yesterday: Best of the 90s. And the event lived up to the expectations.
Dubbed the ‘Three-the-hard-way’ edition, the event featured music courtesy of DJ Marvin ( Kool 97 FM) and ZJ’s Johnny Kool and Liquid (both from Zip 103 FM).
DJ Marvin was tasked with whetting the appetites of patrons in the early hours. His set consisted of vocalists and early 90s hip hop treats. Patrons joined in vocal duties when their favourite song was played.
ZJ Johnny Kool went into the ‘dash out’ segment, unleashing some of the era’s hottest deejay/singing combinations, as well as tunes from the Mad House, Penthouse, and Main Street labels.
ZJ Liquid, in his usual imitable style, rocked the venue with hits after hits from the period.
Members of an American film crew, who were in attendance at the party, were taught by patrons how to dance the ‘Bogle‘ and ‘ Tatie‘ dance moves, among others.
Gyette Ghartey of GLK Entertainment attributed the event’s success to delivery and consistency.
“We try to be consistent and always deliver a good product which is affordable to our patrons and a lot of fun,” Ghartey told the Jamaica Observer.
First held in February 2002, Yesterday: Best of the 90s is held three times annually.
Ghartey spoke about the growth of the event over the past 14 years.
“We have grown in size and numbers. We’ve gotten a new audience as well, but the core of the party remains the same,” he said.
