A legacy begins anew
RAYNOR King, younger brother of the late Daryl King, scored his first overall victory on Sunday at the second Montego Bay Motoring Club (MBMC) Dexterity, held in Montpellier, St James.
“It was a great feeling because I know he would be proud,” King told Auto.
King was driving his late brother’s Honda Civic which had sat dormant after Daryl’s sudden passing in April 2015. He was competing in his second-ever dexterity event. The rather unique course which was set up at the Copperpot Bar & Grill garnered praise from King.
“Kudos to the Montego Bay Motoring Club for setting up such a fun course with mixed surfaces. Two corners in particular reminded me of a sprint,” he said.
Mark March, vice president of MBMC, pointed out that the venue had been on the club’s schedule, but was moved up when their normal venue Catherine Hall Stadium became unavailable.
“Dexterities are about teaching young drivers and the course had a lot to offer, giving drivers three surface types: gravel, tarmac, and mud,” March explained.
The last became even more critical as rain augmented the wet dexterity format so popular on the western side of the island.
“We used the water truck to wet the course, then it started to rain, making the truck irrelevant,” he said.
Given the early success, Raynor, who had been under some tutelage from his brother, is looking to continue the family legacy in motorsports. He hopes to find the sponsorship to compete for the rest of the year.
“I’m looking to focus on rallies and sprints,” Raynor said.
King beat out another young Montegonian star, seventeen-year-old Nicolas Barnes, and the winner of the opening round of the series Ian Wright. Oliver Townsend and Brandon King completed the top five finishers.
