Jamaica International Invitational: Janieve Russell clocks new PB to win 400mH
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Jamaica’s Janieve Russell clocked a new personal best (PB) time of 54.61 seconds on her way to victory in the women’s 400m hurdles at the 13th staging of the Jamaica International Invitational Meet (JIIM) now under way at the National Stadium in Kingston.
Russell, running out of lane three, ran a well-paced race to cover her opponents on the final curve before sprinting away to lower her previous PB of 54.64 seconds. Her compatriot Ristananna Tracey was second in a season’s best 55.31s, with Leah Nugent (56.24s) of the United States taking third.
Russell, 22, who attends the University of Technology (UTech), is now ranked as the second fastest in the world, behind Eilidh Doyle (54.53s) of Great Britain.
Meanwhile, 2014 world junior champion Jaheel Hyde of Jamaica was narrowly beaten into second in the men’s event in a time 49.16 seconds.
The event was won by Jeffrey Gibson (48.96s) of the Bahamas, while Bershawn Jackson (49.29s) of the United States was third.
