Malvo earns Own Money
BEFORE migrating to Toronto, Canada in 2005, singer Tiffanie Malvo noticed an encouraging trend among Jamaican women.
“A lot of women, young women, were opening businesses. There was a sense of entrepreneurship, and that was important to me because at the end of the day it’s my generation,” she said.
Female empowerment drove Malvo to write and record the song Own Money, produced by Brixton Music Group, an independent Kingston record label.
Own Money continues a series of recent releases by 23-year-old Malvo, the daughter of singer Anthony Malvo, best known for 1980s hits like Come Back To Me (with Tiger).
Late last year she recorded Mr Wrong for producer Black Pearl and Smooth Motion, produced by Suku from Ward 21. Her most ambitious project, however, may be the recently released Like It, which is produced by EDM hit-makers Major Lazer.
Malvo returned to music full-time after completing studies at George Brown College in Toronto, where she earned a degree in human resource management.
Her first recording, Gimmie The Ganja, was done with her father in 2011. Following his path into music has not been easy.
“There is pressure…people expect you to sound and to do well. So, yes, there’s a lot of pressure,” she said.
