Combined team trio mines gold
A Jamaica combined martial arts team trio led by Captain Nicholas Dusard, including Olympian Kenneth Edwards and former Captain Jason McKay, last Saturday won top honours at the Oregon Open in the United States.
The Jamaicans secured victory against an Original Taekwon-Do Federation of America invitational team in the last event at the tournament after earlier winning three individual medals.
The match was expected to be a runaway affair for Jamaica, who have an unbeaten streak in team fighting, including gold at the International Taekwon-Do Federation World Cup on home soil in 2014.
Seemingly cruising towards victory after Kenneth Edwards got the nod of the four judges for his opening match, young Ron Honka held Dusard to a tie.
This left McKay to seal the deal in his bout against Lawrence Archer, with whom he had exchanged victories in the preliminary rounds, but had lost second spot to the big American in the individual masters division won by Germany.
However, a badly battered McKay used his experience as a team fighter to capture the scoring of one judge and thereafter used defensive tactics to prevent Archer from scoring, handing Jamaica a 7-5 aggregate win.
The Hood River, Oregon Open provided the Jamaicans with a much-needed warm-up in anticipation of their defence of the Gold Cup at the United States Open in July.
