On to the Governor’s Cup for Orpheus
The Lotto Classic for the Governor’s Cup on May 28 is next on the agenda for the Anthony Nunes-trained Orpheus after a decisive victory in a Restricted Stakes event at Caymanas Park on Wednesday over the two-turn distance of nine furlongs and 25 yards.
After just failing to catch
Future King, finishing second by one-and-a-quarter lengths in the recent 2,000 Guineas over a mile,Orpheus (Adore The Gold — La Reina) showed his liking for the longer races as he romped home by seven-and-a-half lengths in a fast time of 1:54:3 minutes behind splits of 26:1, 50:5, 1:14.3 and 1:40:1 minutes. Although the track was very fast on the day, this could not detract from what was a defining performance byOrpheus.
As usual,
Orpheus, ridden by regular rider Shane Ellis, was held off the early fractions set by another Classic aspirant and major rivalChace The Great (Jevvanne Erwin) andMesmerize, under Robert Stewart, heading around the first of two turns.
The order would remain the same until leaving the half-mile when Ellis said go, and
Orpheus then moved alongsideChace The Great coming into the lane.
After a short battle,
Orpheus showed his strength and powered home to register his third career victory.
Chace The Great did his best, but was again outstripped by the better colt, while Gary Glitter (Rayan Wilson) was another nine lengths in third.
“This is a big run by
Orpheus today (Wednesday). His performance was excellent as he completed the distance in a very fast time, and this showed that he will be a force to be reckoned with in the longer races to come. I wasn’t worried about any other runner in the race as I knew that it was an easy race,” Ellis said.
“If he stays healthy and fit, he is going to have a say on Derby Day,” the champion jockey declared.
